USURBIL AND EZ DOK AMAIRU
In Usurbil the streets are filled with Basque culture. Throughout history our streets have been a landmark for Basque culture. On this route we would highlight Usurbil’s link with the Ez Dok Amairu movement, which began the revival of Basque culture. Two people from Usurbil were part of this movement, the Artze brothers. Other members of the movement also made their mark in Usurbil, including Mikel Laboa and Remigio Mendiburu. Several pieces by these artists are exhibited in the open air around the urban landscape: the Mikel Laboa Plaza and the sculpture in his honour, and the monument to Udarregi by Remigio Mendiburu. Also worthy of note is the painter Jose Luis Zumeta, who did not belong to Ez Dok Amairu but was one of the founders of the Gaur group, together with Chillida, Mendiburu, Ruiz Balerdi, Oteiza and others. His large mural in the town square deserves a special mention.
